I found this to be a good mix of both evolution and molecular techniques to quantify ecology. Good read.

A powerful call for an ecological approach to sustainable design that guides us through the philosophic foundation to sustainable design - not "green wash". The discussion on the need for large scale actions and particularly watershed protection is quite powerful.

In one essay--"California Indians as Capable Resource Managers"--taken from this book, McEvoy convincingly argues that the native peoples living here before Europeans came TRULY lived and used resources sustainably.
We ought to take to heart the ways the Indians dealt with the issues of resource depletion and over-population that we face today.
The format of this book is question and answer only. I found it very difficult to organize the facts presented in any coherent way. And it is definitely a book with an environmental and pollution agenda. True ecological principles are a minor part. It is a good approach for the general public not seeking a deeper understanding of ecological principles and fundamentals. I plan to glean what I can and give the book away. I bought a real ecology textbook from Amazon to instruct me in the fundamentals I wanted to know.

Thanks you for your prompt delivery of my new book. It was needed for on-line graduate coursework and it arrived early so that I was able to prepare for the class.

One of the seminal books in fire ecology, regardless of what area of the world you're in. Despite the focus in this book on Northwestern forests, Agee provides one of the best overviews of wildland fire, fire effects, and fire history available, seamlessly integrating fire science, history, and policy into a seamless narrative. Agee's focus in this book is on Northwest forests, specifically on forest stand development patterns, yet his discussion of theory, the fundamental tenets of fire ecology and fire effects on an ecosystem are broadly applicable.

Great, very accessible writing style.

A good attempt at encompassing this broad area of research. This is an area of research that has needed an updated text book. The book does suffer from several things. First the chapters are written by a variety of authors and in this case this method has produced a book with a wide array of writing styles that makes it difficult to go from one chapter to the next. Second the book is very selective in its citations. Particular authors are cited often even under circumstances where more in depth work or even more classic work has been done by others.

Soil Ecology met the criteria described on your site, and proved to be an excellent book on the subject. It covers the scientific and practical application in a simple and practical way.

Scientific in nature, but still easy to read. An excellent reference for anyone beginning the study of wetlands. Includes one chapter on constructed/treatment wetlands.
